Katie was born in Los Angeles and raised in Europe. Her parents loved art and would often take the family to museums to experience the world's greatest paintings. Katie responded strongly to the master works of Degas, Monet, Sisley, Rembrandt, Velasquez and Vermeer. From an early age she spent her time drawing and painting as a means of exploring the world around her. She was mesmerized by the vibrant energy of light and color, and the challenge of rendering form.

Katie received a B.A. in Art History from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a B.F.A. (Oil Painting emphasis) from the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. In New Orleans she also discovered pastels. She loved their buttery quality and ease of use. Katie worked as a pastel portrait artist for several years in New Orleans, then traveled extensively with her husband, a dancer, in Europe. Pastels were the perfect medium for a traveling lifestyle - and for catching the all-too-fleeting qualities of the moment.

Attracted to the beauty of the Bay Area, she and her husband settled in Marin County in 1990. With gorgeous vistas and good weather available year round, Katie devoted new energy to California Plein Air and studio paintings done in oil, pastel, and colored pencil. She studied with noted artists Randall Sexton, Ray Roberts, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Kim Lordier, Albert Handell, Glenna Hartmann, Armand Cabrera, and Clark Mitchell, among others. Over the years her award-winning paintings have been admired and collected internationally. Katie's paintings are prized for a gentle sense of place imbued with mystery and light.
