John Deckert was born in Munich Germany where his father was serving in the US military.  He received a Bachelor of Arts from Austin College and studied Fine Art at the University of Texas.  He lived in New York City for more than 20 years where he participated in both group and one man exhibitions including the Allan Stone Gallery and Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue.  He worked as a preparator for the Allan Frumkin Gallery and wrote essays on the contemporary art scene for ARTS Magazine.  Over time his paintings gradually shed their mantle of abstract imagery and matured into figurative and realistic work.  John spent a year in Paris honing his figurative skills before returning to New York.  In 2003 John arrived in the beautiful countryside of Northern California which provided fresh inspiration for his work.

John thrives on variety in both subject matter and media.  He works in oils, watercolors and pastels and sketches constantly.  He moves easily from painting rugged coastal landscapes to creating intimate human portraits in his studio.
