Although we will still print and mail a printed version of our newsletter twice yearly, we hope to keep you engaged and informed on the latest happenings at Buckelew via this monthly email newsletter. We promise that each issue will be brief, fun, and informative.Speaking of fun and informative, what do you think of our completely new website? www.buckelew.org
I think you’ll find that navigation on the new website is easy and intuitive. New Resource Centers for Clients, Families, Professionals, and Supporters deliver access to news, information, and self-help tools that we hope will keep you coming back for more. Still on the way is a monthly blog featuring my thoughts on mental health wellness and recovery, social enterprise, and sustainability.
While there, please check out our Facebook Fan Page and Twitter feeds for up-to-the minute insider perspectives, announcements, and action alerts. We cover 2 action alerts in this issue—both of them are quick, easy ways for you to support Buckelew with just a few clicks of your mouse.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Ashoka Changemakers announced on November 24 that our innovative Blue Skies Personnel Service has been chosen as a finalist in the international “Rethinking Mental Health” competition. A prestigious panel of judges selected a group of 12 finalists—out of more than 340 entries submitted from 42 countries—for their vision, impact and unique approach, and we’re one of them! Now that the judges have narrowed the field, we need your help to take us to the finish line to receive a $5000 award. All you have to do is register and cast your vote before December 9. And then spread the word! The 3 finalists to receive the most online votes will be declared winners on December 16 and each will receive a price of $5000. In addition, your participation raises awareness of our work among donors, foundations, and thought leaders. You can read more about this competition in which innovators from around the world submitted smart programs and bold solutions to expand our understanding of mental health and wellness.
On November 16 Facebook and JPMorgan Chase launched “Chase Community Giving: You Decide What Matters”, a grassroots campaign to inspire a new way of corporate philanthropy. Chase is enlisting Facebook’s 300 million users to vote for which small and local nonprofits will receive donations totaling $5 million. You can help us by casting your vote—and asking all of your Facebook friends to cast their votes, too—right here.
Have you seen the brief—but very moving—BringChange2Mind anti-stigma video? Ron Howard generously donated his direction, and John Mayer donated his song, “Say,” to this anti-stigma PSA that features Glenn Close, her sister, Jessie Close, and others who live with mental illness in their families. Check it out!By Cameron Duncan
Start planning now for MarinScapes 2010! Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company has again stepped up as our Event Sponsor, and other companies are lining up with their sponsorship commitments for 2010. And thank you to all of our MarinScapes 2009 sponsors. Those who joined us last year noted delightful changes throughout the MarinScapes Gala. There’s more in store for next year!
A documentary video, Marin Mind/Scapes: Stories of Art, Nature, and Wellness—will be premiered on Gala night, and shown throughout the weekend. Marin Civic Center Library’s Laurie Thompson and Marilyn Longinotte Geary will show the stories of 10 Marin/Scapes artists, some of whom are current or former Buckelew clients in what promises to be a moving video.
Local restaurants will serve delectable samples of their fare, paired with sumptuous wines donated by Chris Welch of Joseph W. Ciatti Company. Desserts, champagne and sparkling waters will delight patrons throughout the main exhibit. Our Silent Auction will also offer unique fun for everyone. Each ticket to Marin/Scapes supports our programs, which in turn benefits your community.
Join us and be the first to see Sherrill Miller’s featured painting for 2010. Please visit our Marin/Scapes page for information, reservations, sponsorships and donations.
A growing number of donors are extending their many years of giving to Buckelew Programs by including us in their estate plans. These “planned gifts” create an enduring legacy of support while also offering significant tax and other advantages.
We recently established a legacy society to recognize those who have made planned gifts to the organization and to encourage others to do the same. Members will be honored for their commitment to ensure Buckelew’s future by creating a deferred gift through a will, trust, or life income or life insurance program.
Members of the legacy society will be invited to an annual event featuring the executive director, board members, and staff. The group will be formally announced at its first annual event in May 2010.
Anyone who has made a planned gift to Buckelew is eligible for membership. Planned gifts can support Buckelew’s general fund or can be directed to a specific purpose.
“A planned gift may also allow you to make a much larger gift, and create a more significant legacy, than you might imagine possible,” said Steven Ramsland, Buckelew's Executive Director.
There are many planned giving options available, each with its own host of benefits including tax breaks and income for life. Examples include gifts of real estate or securities, IRAs, charitable trusts, living wills, and bequests.
To learn more about supporting Buckelew Programs through a planned gift, or to let us know that you have already included Buckelew in your estate plan, contact the Development Department at (415) 457-6966, or go to our Planned Giving info page.
Buckelew recently welcomed Daniel Waters of Novato as a new member of our board of directors.
Dan brings more than 30 years of business experience to the board, including experience as a top-level executive and corporate officer for Fortune Brands Inc., a Fortune 500 company, and its North American division, ACCO Brands. He has led many successful financial and business development programs, as well as overseen portfolio strategy, marketing, operations and business development initiatives. Dan serves on the board’s finance and strategic planning committees, and has also a member of the Stanford Business School’s Alumni Consulting Team, which has been assisting Buckelew by providing pro bono consulting on social enterprise development.
Welcome aboard, Dan!
